GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., (June 24, 2014) — Cat rescue organization Carol’s Ferals has announced plans to create a massive mural for ArtPrize 2014. The group is asking young artists from across West Michigan to color card stock cat heads that will fit together to make the piece.
The entry, called “11,000” is meant to raise awareness about the feline overpopulation problem in the area. Carol Manos, Executive Director of Carol’s Ferals explained that one intact female cat, her mate and off-spring have the breeding potential to create 11,000 cats over the course of a 5-year period.
“It’s important to get the point across of how community cats or feral, wild or friendly stray cats breed,” Manos told FOX 17 News. “You can say a number, but when you visually see a number represented, that’s going to be the impact.”
So far, kids have been able to color the cats at Festival of the Arts and the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum. Manos said the piece is only 2-3 thousand pieces shy of the 11,000 thousand goal.
Carol’s Ferals is teaming up with Spectrum Health on the collaborative piece, which will be displayed at Spectrum 25–located at 25 Michigan– on the windows on the hospital’s food court.
ArtPrize 2014 runs from September 24-October 12th.
