WEST MICHIGAN (June 28, 2014) — While thunderstorms are expected on Sunday, the better chance for widespread strong to severe storms will occur Monday evening/Monday night.

Heat and humidity continue to build in to the region. That, coupled with an upper level disturbance may spark some showers/storms Sunday morning through mid-day, then as things heat up during the day we may see another round of showers and storms during the afternoon/early evening. That said, some areas may still miss out on these storms.

The best chance for storms area wide will be Monday evening/night as a cold front approaches. The attached photo is from the Storm Prediction Center and is valid from Monday morning through early Tuesday morning.  Right now southern lower Michigan (south of Grand Rapids) is on the northern edge of this slight risk for severe weather, but that will likely change as we get closer to the actual event.

The primary threats will likely be wind and/or hail. Chances for storms increase Monday afternoon, but the bigger event occurs Monday evening/night after all of the daytime heating and energy has built up in the atmosphere. Brief, heavy rain and extensive lightning will also be additional threats we may see.

After this frontal system moves through the Great Lakes, cooler weather is expected as we head through the middle of next week. In fact, conditions look fabulous (currently) for Friday July fourth with temperatures in the upper 70s/near 80 and low humidity too.
