070214arthurGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — (July 2, 2014) It’s been a full month since Atlantic Hurricane Season started and exactly one month later we have our first named storm of the 2014 Atlantic Hurricane.

Tropical Storm Arthur formed July 1st off the coast of Florida and is forecast to move north-northeast along the southern Atlantic coast as a Tropical Storm before strengthening into a Category 1 Hurricane just off of the coast of North Carolina by Thursday evening.

Arthur is forecast to move along the eastern seaboard through the holiday weekend but remain just offshore as a Category 1 storm. The storm will bring heavy rain, the chance for severe weather and high surf to the Atlantic states through Monday.

Wednesday marks 2, 808 days since the last major hurricane (Category 3+) made landfall on the continental U.S. soil. This is the longest period of inactivity since the 1900’s. The last major hurricane to make landfall was Hurricane Wilma on October 24th 2005.
