GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (July 3, 2014) — Leading up to the 4th of July, there’s not a single vacancy at Grand Haven State Park for camping.
It’s a good things for the Abraham girls who sell lemonade. Who doesn’t like ice cold lemonade? Especially at the beach. A cup is just a quarter.
“We really enjoy doing the lemonade stand. It`s just fun. Like working with money and having our own tiny business,” Amelia Abraham, 12, said.
Amelia, Aleah, and Abby run the business by Lake Michigan, at Grand Haven State Park.
They have been coming with their dad for the past 7 years.
Anthony Abraham said, “We really enjoy this side of the state. We love Lake Michigan. We love the beach. The weather`s always great. The community`s good here. There`s always stuff to do in town.”
Those are all reasons why DNR park supervisor Joyce Rhodes said the occupancy rate is always high around the 4th of July.
“Our average stay length is 11 days, which is unusual for Michigan state parks. A lot people stay 15 nights, that`s the maximum,” Rhodes explained.
Vsitors, of course, hit the beach where Rhodes said large amounts of seaweed came ashore following Monday night’s storms. So her staff is in constant clean up mode.
“Just keeping up with bathroom cleaning is a big thing. Because when we get this many visitors, they go through a lot of toilet paper, and they carry al to of sand on their feet and create messes, not always intentionally,” she said.
It`s hard work. But for the Abraham girls, work is fun. They`re just glad dad books this camping spot 6 months out as soon as reservations open, every year.
Rhodes said, “As soon as the window opens its full.”
