EGELSTON TWP, Mich. -- A West Michigan business is getting national recognition when it comes to their bacon.

The popular breakfast food has been well loved by customers at John Drummond's Butcher Shop in Egelston Township for years, but now it's gaining more attention.

The store has been around for more than a century, a fourth generation shop John Drummond has been at the helm for 35 years now. He says he always knew its where he would end up.

“I've always followed my dad and I've always wanted to do what he did.”

Drummond also has used a little bit of his own creativity. He says he was selling so much bacon he had a lot of leftover pieces so he found another way to put it to good use.

It's called bacon sausage, the ultimate breakfast meat. In fact it’s that bacon that’s put him in the national spotlight.

“I've seen how other people make bacon and thought of doing it my own way . I tried a few different recipes and this was the one I liked the best called it "grand dad's bacon.”

Word of it made it to the website ‘Bacon Scouts.’ The scouts travel the nation seeking the best meats. Drummond’s bacon made it to number eleven, the only shop even ranking in Michigan.

Drummond is careful to not give away the secret recipe but says it flies off the shelves.

“I do double smoke my bacon with a white hickory and it just tastes really good.”
