IONIA, Mich. — Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office Monday issued its report on Michael Elliot’s escape from the Ionia Correctional Facility.

Schuette says it’s “undeniable” that both technology and personnel at the prison failed that day in February, citing staff inattentiveness and critical security systems that failed.  Among those systems were the E-Flex wire alarm system that wasn’t working and weak fencing around the prison.

He also listed 12 recommendations to improve security at the Ionia Correctional Facility.   Those included restoring full-time perimeter controls in armed vehicles and manning the five observation towers surrounding the prison’s perimeter.

Michael Elliot escaped the prison Feb. 2 and was apprehended in LaPorte County, Ind. the next day.  He was serving a life sentence for four murders he committed in the ’90s.
