Newborn baby discovered on side of dirt road

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY NEWAYGO CO. SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT:

On 7-28-14 at approximately 10:30am Newaygo County Central Dispatch received a report of a newborn baby found near the roadway on Marion St. near Diamond Lake north of White Cloud, by an individual walking his dog.  Deputies, EMS and Child protective services responded to the scene where the newborn was transported to the Hospital.  The newborn was breathing when located however, current condition of the newborn is unknown.  Through investigation the mother was located a short time later.  She was also transported to the Hospital for evaluation.  The investigation is ongoing.

NEWAYGO COUNTY, Mich. – Detectives in Newaygo County are investigating the discovery of a newborn baby found alongside a dirt road north of White Cloud.

The Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department said the baby was found at around 10:30 Monday morning by a person walking their dog on West Marion Street near Diamond Lake.

The baby’s umbilical cord was still attached the infant.

An ambulance transported the child to a nearby hospital where it is doing just fine, said investigators.

The mother of the child was tracked down, then was hospitalized to be checked out.  It’s not clear if she will face any charges in the case.

Michigan does have a Safe Haven Law which protects mothers who abandon their child up to three days old.   The infant must be dropped off at a fire station, hospital, police station or any emergency service provider in the state.
