Drop Shot ride’s cable snaps at Ionia Free Fair

IONIA FREE FAIR

IONIA, Mich. — A cable broke on a carnival ride Friday at the 2014 Ionia Free Fair.

Free Fair marketing director Becca Usher told FOX 17 NEWS that the cable broke on the Drop Shot ride, which holds 16 people. She said the ride was a drop ride and the cable broke after riders already were dropping, so the ride and riders both were unaffected.

Usher said the only thing noticeable at the time was a loud snap when the cable broke.

There were no injuries.

She said the ride was taken down for the remainder of the fair.

The cause of the malfunction is unknown. State inspectors checked the ride and declared it safe just two days prior to the cable break.

The 2014 Ionia Free Fair wrapped up its 2014 run Saturday after opening on July 17.

Well my daughter and niece and i were on the ride when it happend. I was never asked by no director if we were hurt. Also was told by a worker that they do inspection every day. The ride was still going down when it snaped and glass was flying every where, the eat belts came undone, and the big red thing feel on top of the ride. I do have a video but all you can see is the belt snap and hear everything do to the fact my sister was so scared.

I am so glad you weren’t seriously injured! What a scary event you and your family experienced. I am disgusted that no one asked after your family’s health. Thanks for sharing your story.
