HOLLAND, Mich. – Police have identified the driver of Sunday’s fatal motorcycle accident as David Achterhof, 57 of Holland.

The three people in the car that hit Achterhof are all in custody at the Holland Department of Public Safety being held for ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) as a result of their immigration status.
The crash happened Sunday around 9:05 p.m. on 32nd Street near Apple Avenue.

Police say a 1993 GMC Suburban was traveling East on 32nd Street near Apple Avenue and according to witnesses crossed the centerline causing a head on collision with Achterhof’s motorcycle traveling West on 32nd Street.

Achterhof was transported to the hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

Police say immediately after the collision, two occupants exited the vehicle and fled from the area on foot. Officers tracked them down and took them into custody approximately a quarter-mile from the site of the crash.

The third occupant was also taken into custody.

Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office is working with police to determine additional criminal charges.

According to his obituary Achterhof was raised in Hamilton on a family farm. He worked 23 years at Johnson Controls and was an active member of Calvary Reformed Church.

The obituary says Achterhof was married to his wife Tammy for 33 years, and was a father and a grandfather.
