WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A restaurant in North Carolina is surprising some of its customers with a 15 percent discount.

Mary Haglund, the owner of Mary’s Gourmet Diner, tells WGHP, customers who pray, meditate, or just say “Thank you” are receiving that discount on their checks.

“We don’t tell the people they’re getting a discount,” Haglund said. “We’ve never promoted it.  We just present the ticket.”

Haglund says that her servers are under no obligation to give out that discount and that many give it out at their own discretion.

“My wait staff is under no obligation,” Haglund told WGHP, “Some people I have that work here are kind of opposed to it, and that’s fine.”

The discount isn’t new; it was introduced four years ago after Haglund’s daughter noticed some regular customers praying before each meal.  The discount recently gained national attention after a customer received the discount and posted it on their Facebook page.
