WEST MICHIGAN — Neighborhoods across the area will band together on Aug. 5 for the National Night Out crime and drug prevention event.

The event is meant to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, create support for local anticrime efforts, strengthen the relationship between police and the community, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back.

The following areas in West Michigan will participate in National Night Out:

  • Muskegon County: From 7-10 p.m., neighbors are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights, and spend the evening with police outside. Lowe’s will also donate light bulbs to give away.
    • Norton Shores: The Windflower Bay community will host a National Night Out event from 6-8 p.m. between Westshire Drive and Windflower Way. The Norton Shores Estates mobile home community will also host an event from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Sherbrooke Parkway and Trenton Drive.
  • Calhoun County: Emmett Township has partnered with the City of Battle Creek for the event. It will include refreshments, entertainment, games, and giveaways. Starting at 9 p.m., neighbors in Emmett Township are asked to turn on house or porch lights and churches are asked to ring their bells. The Emmett Township Department of Public Safety will also be at Mill Race Park from 6-9 p.m. in Downtown Battle Creek.
  • Ottawa County: Residents in the greater Holland area have been invited to Kollen park at 5 p.m. for music, a pie eating contest, a dunk tank, a vintage car show, and more.
