1. Primary election results in

800px-Voting_United_StatesVoters in Michigan have approved Proposal 1, which will do away with the personal property tax. The measure also sets up a statewide authority that will receive a share of Michigan’s use tax and use it to reimburse local units of government for the money they would have received from the personal property tax. 2. Brian Ellis concedes against Justin Amash

After a ten month campaign for the Republican seat in the 3rd congressional district primary, Brian Ellis conceded on Aug. 5 to his incumbent challenger, Rep. Justin Amash. Ellis says he called Amash to concede but Amash didn’t answer, instead letting it go to voicemail. Amash claims that Ellis owes his family an apology, accusing him and Rep. Jamarion3. 12-year-old to be charged as adult in stabbing death of 9-year-old boy

12-year-old Jamarion Lawhorn was charged in a Grand Rapids courtroom as an adult with open murder for the death of 9-year-old Connor Verkerke. Both the prosecution and defense say they’ve never seen someone so young charged with murder before. Due to the seriousness of the crime, Lawhorn is being held at a juvenile detention center without bond. He’s due back in court on Aug. 13. Read more: 12-year-old charged as an adult for open murder

4. U.S. appeals court to hear Michigan same-sex marriage case

The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, Ohio will hear arguments today regarding same-sex marriage in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. This comes after a federal judge in Detroit ruled that Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage  was unconstitutional. Shortly after, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette filed an appeal, which resulted in a stay on that ruling, which currently remains in effect. apparently5. ‘Apparently’ kids talks about becoming internet sensation

Noah Ritter, 5, confessed that he doesn’t watch the news “because I’m a kid”, but now this little guy IS the news.
