1. 13-hour standoff comes to an end in Mecosta County

morley 13 hour stand offPolice took a 40-year-old man from Vestaburg into custody on Wednesday following a 13-hour standoff. The Mecosta County Sheriff said it started as a domestic violence report in Montcalm County. Then, around 9 a.m., deputies in Mecosta County were tipped off about a car matching the suspect’s that was parked in the woods near Monroe Road in Morley. When deputies arrived, they surrounded a home there. Tactical units used tear gas to try and force the suspect from the home. Around 9:45 p.m., he surrendered and is expected to be arraigned on Thursday. Read more: Tear gas brings 13-hour standoff to an end

2. Police in Missouri fire tear gas at protesters following teen’s shooting death missouri shooting aftermath

Wednesday night saw more unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, following an incident in which a police officer shot and killed a teenager. The teen, Michael Brown, was seen tussling at the window of a police vehicle on Saturday. Two witnesses told police they saw the officer get out of his car and chase Brown, and then repeatedly shoot him while his hands were in the air. The incident has led to protests and looting in the city, and on Wednesday, police fired tear gas at demonstrators. A tear gas canister also landed in front of a crew from Al Jazeera America. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced recalls for certain smoke detectors that fail to alert, as well as candles that can pose a fire hazard because of high flames. The 400 and 500 series Edwards-branded and Interlogix smoke detectors can experience radio frequency interference, which can cause the product to fail to alert consumers of a fire.  High flames from tin candles sold exclusively at Hobby Lobby can ignite the surface of the wax and the polymer coating on the tin container, posing a fire hazard. 4. Volunteer registration launches for ArtPrize 2014

ArtPrize 2014 is looking for people to fill more than 12,000 volunteer hours during the competition this fall. The volunteer season will begin on August 21 and continue through October 12. Volunteer schedules will become available to the public starting on August 22 at 9 a.m. and it will allow volunteers to choose positions and shifts they would like to work.
