MORLEY, Mich. –  Mecosta County Sheriff Todd Purcell said a 40-year-old man from Vestaburg was taken into custody following a 13-hour standoff on Wednesday.

The sheriff said it started out as a domestic violence report from Montcalm County.  Mecosta deputies were tipped off to a car matching the suspect’s parked in the woods near Monroe Road and 125th Street in Morley around 9 a.m.

Sheriff Purcell said it appears as if the suspect was trying to hide the car.

When deputies arrived they surrounded the home.

The sheriff said the victim of the alleged domestic violence said she got a text from the suspect that read, “I’ve got guns for the cops.”

Police brought in tactical units and used tear gas on several occasions trying to force the suspect from the home.

Around 9:45 p.m. the suspect surrendered to police.  He was the only person in the home and was unarmed at the time of his arrest.

He was taken to the Montcalm County jail where he has three outstanding warrants according to the sheriff.

The man was wanted for domestic assault, felony kidnapping, drunk driving.

The sheriff said the home where the standoff occurred belonged to girlfriend of the suspects.

He is expected to be arraigned Thursday morning in Montcalm County where he will face an additional charge of resisting arrest stemming from the standoff.
