MATTAWAN, Mich.- A man is currently in the Van Buren County Jail after breaking into a home Saturday morning.

According to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a 911 call in the 43000 block of Woodland Drive to investigate a report of someone banging on the outside of the callers home.

The family told deputies that they were sleeping when they believed they heard someone inside their home. The homeowner found a pair of shoes on their deck and it looked like someone had tried to break in.

Deputies found two outside screen windows broken, one of which was outside a bedroom where a 14-year-old boy was sleeping.

While deputies were still at the home, the homeowner alerted the deputies of a noise in the treeline north of his home. Deputies then checked the wooded area and found the 21-year-old man from Paw Paw attempting to hide.

While deputies were trying to arrest the man, he resisted. The man was taken into custody with out injury to himself or officers.  When deputies found the man, he was barefoot and had two broken screens next to him.

The suspect told deputies that he thought he knew the family living in the home and that he “needed to use the restroom.”

The suspect has been charged with attempted home invasion and resisting arrest, and currently being held in the Van Buren County Jail.
