The Highway has since re-opened

IONIA COUNTY, Mich. – Westbound I-96 is shut down in Ionia County due to multiple crashes.

According to the sheriff’s department, the stretch of highway is closed at the Saranac exit because of two multi-truck crashes.

One person was reportedly hurt in the first crash near the Clarksville exit. Dispatchers say that person was taken to the hospital but they do not have an update on their condition.  At least one person was injured in the second crash near Saranac.  Dispatchers confirm that one person had to be extricated from their car and were also taken to the hospital. Again, no update on the condition of that patient as well.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

Regarding the detour MDOT said, “Westbound I-96 traffic shall take Exit #59 and turn right onto Nash Hwy.  Turn left onto Grand River Ave.  Grand River Ave changes name to Cascade Rd at the Kent county line. Turn left onto Alden Nash Ave.  Turn right onto the westbound I-96 entrance ramp.”
