1. 1 killed, 2 injured in Kent County crash

drunk driving crashOne woman was killed and two other people were injured on Wednesday in a crash in Kent County’s Tyrone Township. Around 8:15 p.m., a Ford pickup truck was headed south on Tyrone Avenue and blew through a stop sign, hitting a Dodge Charger. The passenger in the charger, Anna Escutio-Chavez, 25, was taken to the hospital and died from her injuries. The driver of the Charger was also injured, and is in stable condition. The at-fault driver has head injuries, and is also listed in stable condition. Police say alcohol played a role in the crash. 2. Store cashier says he was fired for hugging customer

Grocery Store HugsFred Civis is facing criminal charges for an incident that happened at a Plumb’s Valu-Rite Foods store in Whitehall back in July. Civis has worked at the store for 39 years, and says he hugged a customer. He says it was a friendly way that he liked to greet customers. However, the customer complained, and eventually, a sheriff’s deputy arrested him on charges of misdemeanor assault and battery. Since then, residents have joined a Facebook page called “Boycott Whitehall Plumb’s for Fred” in support of Civis. The store released a statement saying that the termination came after multiple policy violations. He’s due back in court on September 16. 3. Grand Valley State University enrolls record number of students

gvsu top collegeWest Michigan’s largest university is seeing record-breaking enrollment numbers this year. The school has 4,226 first-year students for the fall term, bringing the total number of students to 25,094. The percentage of minority students is also up 15.6% and more than 400 international students have enrolled at GVSU. Finally, the number of out-of-state students has increased to 1,384. 4. He ate what?! Great Dane eats 43 (and a half) socks

great dane socks2According to a 3-year-old Great Dane, socks aren’t just for feet anymore. Apparently, they also make pretty tasty snacks. In fact, they’re so yummy to this super-sized pooch that he ate 43 and a half socks. He had shown a hankering for socks before, but the extent of the problem wasn’t apparent until he got sick and the X-rays showed what was in his belly. His vet clinic later submitted those X-rays to the annual “They Ate WHAT?” contest at Veterinary Practice News. The Great Dane won the $500 third place prize, losing out to a frog who at 30 rocks and a German shorthaired pointer who ate a metal shish kabob skewer. Read more: He ate what?! 5. Did you see this? ‘Little Rascals’ recreate movie poster 20 years later

The actors from the 1994 remake of “The Little Rascals” reunited to recreate the movie’s poster, as well as other memorable moments from the film, including Alfalfa and Spanky’s “tutu” scene.
