One man dead after rollover crash on I-96

FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich.- One man died Sunday morning after a rollover crash on westbound I-96 in Fruitport Township.

According to the Fruitport Township Police Department, the crash happened around 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning on westbound I-96 near mile marker 2. Officers state the driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Thomas Chandler from Muskegon County, was travelling westbound on I-96 when his vehicle left the roadway on the median side of the roadway. The vehicle then came back on to the roadway, then left the roadway again on the right side of the roadway where the vehicle rolled over.

Mr. Chandler was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the vehicle, a 22-year-old man from Muskegon County sustained minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Hackley Hospital for treatment.

One lane of I-96 was shut down for a short time while police investigated the crash.

This crash is still under investigation by the Fruitport Township Police Department.
