MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Charles Johnson spent two seasons as a superstar wide receiver at Grand Valley State University.
Now he’s taking the roster spot of one of the NFL’s biggest superstars.
The Minnesota Vikings signed Johnson off the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad on Saturday and added the second-year receiver to their 53-man roster. He was inactive for Sunday’s game in New Orleans.
The move was made to fill the hole left by star running back Adrian Peterson, who has been put on the league’s exempt list while facing child abuse charges in Texas.
The 25-year-old Kentucky native caught six passes for 65 yards in the preseason for the Browns. He has yet to appear in a regular season NFL game.
The move also reunites Johnson with Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who held the same position with the Browns last season.
The Green Bay Packers took Johnson in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft.
