BYRON CENTER, Mich. - It's often said that 'crime doesn't pay,' but crime prevention is paying off for businesses like Williams Electronics Security and Communications.

"With the uptick in crime and break-ins, we've had a 20 percent increase in sales in those markets," said Jon Geer, who works at Williams Electronics.

Geer is referring to a recent string of business break-ins in Kent County. FOX 17 first told you about the crimes earlier this week.

Geer said today's security system goes beyond just feeling secure. "You can control your garage door opener from it, your lights with it, your blinds with it.  So it's a way of life for some people."

The changes in technology is changing the customer base as well.

"In today's day-and-age, the everyday homeowner is becoming more and more our client," said Geer.

We're told the systems have a wide range when it comes to price.  Security packages at Williams Electronics cost between $5,000 to $30,000.
