KALAMAZOO, Mich. — It’s a loss that wrenched the guts of Bronco faithful throughout Waldo Stadium on a rainy night in Kalamazoo.

Zach Terrell threw for a career-high 370 yards, including a OT touchdown to Darius Phillips – but Andrew Haldeman’s potentially-tying extra point bounced off the left upright, giving the Toledo Rockets a 20-19 overtime win, and handing the Broncos a bitter loss to open the Mid-American Conference schedule.

Haldeman hit a 33-yard field goal with 1:11 left to give WMU a 13-10 lead, but Toledo answered Haldeman’s kick with a 37-yard field goal as time expired to tie the game at 13.

Jarvion Franklin rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown for WMU.

The Rockets were lead by freshman, Terry Swanson, who rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown.

The Broncos defense forced three turnovers and shut Toledo out in the first half – the first time the Rockets had been held scoreless for the first 30 minutes of a game in four seasons.

Western Michigan (2-3, 0-1) hits the road next Saturday, playing at Ball State (1-4, 0-1) at 3:00 p.m.
