Victim identified after fatal house fire in Holland

HOLLAND, Mich.- One man is dead after a house fire in Holland early Saturday morning.

According to the Holland Department of Public Safety, the fire broke out around 4 a.m. at a home in the 70 block of West 13th Street. Once firefighters arrived on scene, they realized that one of the five occupants, 29-year-old, Jeremiah Donald Smith, was not accounted for. They found Smith in the home, and initiated recitative efforts outside.

Fire officials believe the fire originated in the rear living area of the first floor. But the exact cause is unknown at this time.

Smoke detectors were present however it is unknown if they were operational and what role they played in the notification of the occupants.

The loss estimates for the combined damage to the structure and contents is approximately $50,000.
