Report: Former No. 2 overall pick in NBA Draft commits to play for Grand Rapids Drive
(FOX 17) — The Grand Rapids Drive have yet to play a game, but they already have a big win.
According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, Hasheem Thabeet has agreed to join the Drive for its inaugural season.
Thabeet signed with the Pistons on September 25 but was later cut earlier this month. He had spent the last two seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Thabeet was the second overall pick by the Memphis Grizzlies sin the 2009 NBA draft, becoming the first Tanzanian-born player in the NBA. However, the 7-foot-3 center has never been able to find much traction in the league.
In his rookie season, Thabeet played 68 games, the most for him in a single season. Since then he has played for three other teams (Houston, Portland, and Oklahoma City). In 224 career games, Thabeet has averaged 10.5 minutes, 2.2 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
