DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have picked up Alex Avila’s $5.4 million club option for the 2015 season.

Avila, 27, is coming off one of his worst seasons at the plate. He hit a career-low .218 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI. His .686 OPS is the second lowest of his career (.656 in 2010).

While Avila struggled at the plate, he excelled behind it. Avila led the American League by throwing out 36 base-runners which was 34% of attempted base-stealers this season.

Had the Tigers not picked up the option they would’ve paid a $200,000 buyout, though Avila was arbitration eligible and would have remained under team control.
