KENTWOOD, Mich. -- Smoke was spilling out of a first floor unit at the Ashton Woods Apartments when fire units arrived shortly after 5 a.m.
The fire likely started in the living room of one of the first floor apartments, said Kentwood Fire Chief Brent Looman at the scene.
The apartment unit was evacuated, but one woman with life-threatening injuries was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. She later died. Her identity was not immediately released.
Other residents were allowed back into their apartments as a fire investigator continued to work at the scene.
