KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A former Grand Rapids Police officer is facing charges after he allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and raped her.

According to GRPD Lt. Patrick Merrill, 24-year-old Ryan Bruggink was removed from duty shortly after the accusations surfaced on December 1st and resigned the following day.  He was charged in late January.

He faces charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and first-degree home invasion following a Michigan State Police investigation.  He faces up to life in prison if convicted.

According to court documents, Bruggink is accused of going to his ex-girlfriend’s Wyoming home at about 3:30 a.m. Nov. 25, 2014.  He allegedly knocked on the door, and shoved his way inside when she cracked the door.   He then allegedly sexually assaulted her.

He was charged Jan. 27 and has since been released on bond, Merrill said.  He will be back in court Wednesday.
