KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A man was arrested following two police chases through Kent County Friday night.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said deputies were on a routine business check on 74th St SW in Byron Township. The building was under construction and known for previous break-ins. Police discovered a door open and a man standing next to a vehicle inside the building. The man refused to obey police commands and took off in the vehicle.

Deputies said they were able to get out of the way as the man sped toward them through the open door. Other units were called and a police chase began along northbound US 131 from 76th street. Michigan State Police later located the suspect’s vehicle and another chase took place on northbound US-131 from Wealthy Street.

The chase continued through the City of Walker and ended along Lake Michigan Drive near Covell Avenue , where the driver crashed.

Police said no other vehicles were involved in the crash and the driver was taken to the hospital for an evaluation before being taken to jail.

The suspect is being investigated for other break-ins within the Byron Township area, police added.
