ALLEGAN COUNTY, Mich. — Officials at the Allegan County Animal Shelter are trying to find homes for more than 100 cats after they were surrendered at the shelter earlier this week.

According to Undersheriff Frank Baker with the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department, the animals were received by the shelter Monday after homeowners in Otsego voluntarily surrendered them.   Baker said the Otsego residents started feeding a few stray cats and the animals reproduced rapidly.

He said they were no longer able to provide for the cats and were spending as much as $40 a day on food.

According to a post on the Allegan County Shelter’s Facebook page, 112 cats were dropped off at the shelter and many of them are now in need of homes.  The shelter is also asking for donations of kitten food, paper towels and bleach.
