GRAND RAPIDS, Mich -- High school students from across the state flooded to the Deltaplex over the weekend for the FIRST Robotics State Championship.

More than 100 teams came together to participate in the event; which combined the sport of robotic engineering with an emphasis on science and technology.

The teams competed against each other, pitting their robots against the challenge of picking up, stacking, and moving different materials inside of a small "arena".

The international non-profit organization FIRST was responsible for the event.  They say they hope to encourage students to pursue interests in what they refer to as S.T.E.M. disciplines; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

Even Michigan Governor Rick Snyder made an appearance at the event, telling Fox 17, "Michigan is leading the country in this area.  We have more teams than anyone in any other state.  We have 345 teams; 77 new teams in the last year and our goal is to get to 500.  Lets keep going!"

The finalists from the event will be heading to St. Louis in just a few weeks to compete in the World Championship.
