MICHIGAN -- Early election results show that voters in Michigan rejected Proposal 1 on Tuesday.

The proposal would have raised the state sales tax from six to seven percent, creating a new and higher gasoline tax.

Proposal 1 was widely rejected in initial election results across the state, including in West Michigan.  Kent, Kalamazoo, Montcalm, Berrien and Calhoun counties all had decisive 'No' votes on the tax increase.

“It’s essential that making Michigan’s infrastructure safer remains a top priority," Gov. Rick Snyder said in a statement.  "While voters didn’t support this particular proposal, we know they want action taken to maintain and improve our roads and bridges."
