STANWOOD, Mich. — Work on the bridges that carry US-131 over the Muskegon River in Mecosta County north of Stanwood has reached a point where the bridges must be occasionally closed for an extended period. The first closure begins Monday, May 18.

Northbound US-131 will be closed over the Muskegon River May 18 through 21. Southbound US-131 will be closed over the Muskegon River May 18 through May 30.

Detour:

  • Northbound traffic will exit at 8 Mile Road exit 131, east to Northland Drive, north to M-20 Perry Avenue in Big Rapids, east to US-131.

Southbound US-131 will be closed over the Muskegon River from 9 a.m. May 27 until 9 a.m. May 30.

  • Southbound traffic will exit at M-20 Perry Avenue exit 139 Big Rapids, east to Northland Drive, south to 8 Mile Road, east to US-131.

There will be six more closures, says the Michigan Department of Transportation, three in each direction. The project continues through July 23.

(Correction: I previously reported the southbound lanes as closed May 18-30. The copy here has been corrected. The map below has always been correct.)
