WEST MICHIGAN — The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has placed parts of southwest lower Michigan in an “enhanced” risk for severe weather on Sunday. Other portions of our FOX 17 viewing area remain under a “slight” risk for severe weather, while Grand Rapids to the north is under a “marginal” risk.

The graphic attached to this story shows the highest threat across Berrien and Cass Counties in the “enhanced” risk (orange). To a lesser degree, a “slight” risk exists south of Grand Rapids and I-96 in yellow. The rest of the area remains under a “marginal” risk. The common threat with all of these storms will be the possibility of strong damaging straight line winds. Secondary threats include frequent lightning and the chance for heavy downpours.

We may see a round of showers and thunderstorms in the morning hours, then a secondary, stronger line will be possible during the afternoon, especially from Grand Rapids to the south. SPCto read the outlook and discussion from SPC.

Sunday’s weather is expected to be mostly cloudy and breezy with temperatures reaching the low 70s north, mid 70s around GR and vicinity, and the mid/upper 70s across our southern counties. The additional heat, instability, and moisture transport in our southern counties is the reason the higher threat exists there.

Make sure to stay up on later forecasts and keep an eye to the sky on Sunday, and perhaps an ear to FOX 17. Get the complete West Michigan forecast at FOX 17.
