KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Approximately 20 people have been displaced, and the American Red Cross is working to assist them, after an apartment fire on Sunday evening.

It happened at about 6:00 p.m. at an apartment on Phelps Street in Kalamazoo.  Public Safety officers arrived and found heavy smoke in the building, with the occupants in the process of evacuating.

Officials worked for over an hour to locate and extinguish the fire, which was contained to the walls of the apartment.  Residents of the adjoining seven apartment units were forced to leave as a result.

The cause of the fire is unclear at this time.
