Child struck, GR police search for hit and run driver

GRAND RAPIDS,  Mich. — A child was taken to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Friday.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Ethel Avenue SE.

Police said a 9-year-old boy was riding his bike on the sidewalk when he entered the roadway into the path of a vehicle. Witnesses told police the driver got out after hitting the boy and spoke to them before getting back into his vehicle. Authorities said the driver took off down Bernis Street.

The driver is described as a white male, approximately 50 years of age, and heavy set.  He took off in a vehicle that is gold in color, with noticeable damage on the front passenger side of the vehicle.

Police said the boy’s injuries were non-threatening.
