Man seriously hurt after hand caught in machine at Jenison plant

JENISON, Mich. — A worker was seriously injured in an industrial accident at a cellulose insulation production operation Friday morning.

Huerto Gastar, 65, of Grand Rapids was hospitalized in serious condition at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids on Friday evening.

Gastar was operating a wool compression machine at the Nu-Wool Corp. at 2472 Port Sheldon St. in Jenison at 8:15 a.m. Friday when his left hand became entangled in the roller mechanism. Gastar was removed from the machinery prior to the arrival of emergency workers, who transported him to Butterworth.

Nu-Wool has been in operation since 1949 at the location, where the company manufactures environmentally friendly cellulose insulation materials out of recycled paper. It is the longest-running cellulose insulation manufacturer in the world.
