PAW PAW, Mich. — A 46-year-old woman was jailed after a woman stopped at an intersection was carjacked just before midnight Tuesday in Kalamazoo.

According to the Michigan State Police, at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday employees at Van Buren County Central Dispatch were advised of a carjacking that had just occurred in Kalamazoo. The incident began when a woman entered the victim’s vehicle while it was stopped at a stoplight at Burdick Street and Stockbridge Avenue. According to the victim, the suspect stepped into her vehicle and told her that she needed to drive her to Centerville Hospital.

The victim said that she began following the directions given to her by the suspect and while she was driving she became progressively unfamiliar with the area. The victim said she asked the suspect if she could make a telephone call to her mother, which the suspect allowed her to do.

The victim said she called a friend and advised her of the carjacking and her direction of travel. The friend then called 9-1-1 and advised Van Buren County Central Dispatch of the victim’s last known location.

Van Buren County Central Dispatch advised local police and MSP about the incident and shortly thereafter troopers from MSP’s Paw Paw Post stopped a vehicle in Dowagiac that matched the description given to them. Troopers were able to apprehend the suspect and take her into custody without incident.

The suspect was identified as Brenda Lee Macon (pictured), 46, of Dowagiac. She was arraigned Wednesday in Kalamazoo County District Court on a charge of assault and battery.

Macon is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail.
