HOLLAND, Mich  -  A big day in Holland for the Kids’ Food Basket as they celebrate their grand opening.

In Ottawa County alone,  there are 8,000 kids living in poverty,  many of whom may not know where their next meal is coming from.

At Holland Public Schools, a whopping 70 percent of students qualify for free or reduced breakfast and  lunch and hundreds of  families are homeless.

That’s why the Kids’ Food Basket is working to serve nearly 7,000  kids across Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Holland through sack suppers. These are paper bags filled with a sandwich, fruits and veggies, and some snacks to fill that gap that schools and families may not be able to meet.

In Holland these suppers will be going to around 600 students in two schools.

The Kids’ Food Basket Associate Director, Afton DeVos said there was a need here they just couldn’t ignore.

“We are here providing nutritious sack suppers to the children here in Holland. We've been funded and prepared for by the Holland community and they asked us to come here and start this program. We have a proven, effective, and efficient model and we're just thrilled to be able to make a difference in the lives of Holland children."
