SEBEWAING TOWNSHIP, Mich.–An 85-year-old man from Belmont has died following a fall from a zip line at a Christian camp in Huron County.

James J. McNeil fell from a height of about 25 feet Thursday afternoon while suspended from a zip line at Bay Shore Camp in Sebewaing Township, about 95 miles north of Detroit.

Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson tells FOX 17 that McNeil’s harness somehow became detached from the zip line equipment, causing him to fall. However, an inspection of the equipment revealed that it was all in excellent condition.

Hanson says it’s not clear if the victim somehow inadvertently did something to disconnect the harness, but they are reviewing video of the incident in hopes of learning more.

Bay Shore Camp is a year-round facility that hosts a number of outdoor activities, including the zip line. Sheriff Hanson says the camp has an exemplary safety record.
