KENTWOOD, Mich. -- It's a big day for many across west Michigan with the grand opening of the Trader Joe's on 28th Street in Kentwood.

It's been several months of construction, and training new staff members for the big day.People started lining up early, hoping to be one of the firsts to enter the new grocery store.

"I'm very sick, but I've been waiting for Trader Joe's to come here since we moved here three years ago," said Brooke Detgen.

Moving from the east side of the state, Brooke Detgen said that not even a day home sick from work and school will keep her away from the big Trader Joe's opening, something she said that she's been petitioning through Facebook for years.

"I'm glad to hear that we finally made it apparently in their formula for success. I know that there are a lot of shoppers in this area and beyond all of west Michigan that will all come for miles to come to Trader Joe's because it's just awesome," said Detgen.

With plenty of people stopping in to get their favorite Trader Joe's goods, that means crowded aisles and long lines.

"Well I got a little yelled at by a little guy, but you know what, I just said oh honey please be patient. I said it's wonderful and his wife probably made him come you know, didn't want to be here," said shopper Michelle Vanderleest.

"It's a little crowded. The lines are a little long, but you had to expect that," said shopper Tina Immink.

Many people said that they don't mind to stand in line because what's in their carts is worth the wait.

"The things that they don't have in their foods, like GMO's or additives, make me feel like I can trust the things on the shelves without having to take so much time reading the list of ingredients," said Detgen.

"I'm a great cook, don't mean to say. Love to cook. They have so many options that are reasonably priced and gonna be great for the community," said Vanderleest.

Others said that they traveled from along the lakeshore in Muskegon and Holland to check out the grand opening.

Trader Joe's is located at 3684 28th Street SE in Kentwood, and is open 8am-9pm seven days a week.
