OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. – Undersheriff Steve Kempker announced Wednesday that he is interested in filling the top spot in the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Tuesday, Sheriff Gary Rosema announced that he wasn’t going to seek re-election in 2016 after 22+ years of being the top lawman in the county.

Kempker says that he filed with the Ottawa County Clerk Wednesday to seek election as Sheriff.  He says he did so after “much thought, many discussions, encouragement and the full support of my wife Nancy, my children, many others and Sheriff Gary Rosema.”

Kempker has been with the department for over 26 years, starting as a deputy, and moving up the ranks to Undersheriff.
