OCEANA COUNTY, Mich. –A Zeeland man is facing charges after allegedly shooting a black bear in front of her cubs in Oceana County.
Derek Allen Hassevoort is facing a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully taking the animal, according to court documents.
If convicted, he faces up to 90 days in jail and the loss of hunting privileges for 3 years plus the remainder of the year he is convicted.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, Hassevoort had a license to hunt bear, but it’s illegal to kill a mother bear that is in the company of her cubs.
The bear was killed Sept. 23 in Colfax Township.
