KENTWOOD, Mich. -- A police call on a report of a suicidal person turned into a fatal shooting at the Sutton Club Apartments in Kentwood Wednesday night. The Kentwood Police Department says one of their officers shot the subject.

The situation began around 11:12 p.m. in the 1400 block of Hidden Valley Drive when officers were dispatched to check on the welfare of a 47-year-old man. Two KPD officers tried to contact the man but got no response.

The man came out of his apartment and confronted one officer in the hallway, said KPD Chief Thomas Hillen. The man was seen to have a handgun and was pointing it at the officer, who fired his own weapon.

Medical personnel on the scene were unable to save the man.

The officer involved has been on the Kentwood Police force for six years.   His identity is being withheld for now. He "wasn't hurt, but he's visibly shaken," said Chief Hillen.  He's been placed on paid leave.

KPD called in the Kent County Sheriff's Department to investigate the shooting.
