SISTER LAKES, Mich. — A man was throw in jail after assaulting a woman—presumably with a claw hammer, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department.

Van Buren County Dispatch received a 911 call from a woman yelling for help Friday evening around 9:30 pm. The woman, who has only been identified as a 34-year-old resident from the Sister Lakes area, called from the 66000 block of Oak Street. Deputies said they found her bleeding from her forehead and holding an ice pack over a swollen eye.

Police believe a 37-year-old man, also from the Sister Lakes area, assaulted her. The man had run away prior to the deputies arrival. It was reported he was threatening the woman while holding a claw hammer.

Nearby residents told police the man tried entering their homes as he tried to get away from authorities. After chasing him for several hours, the man was spotted and captured.

Police said the man was drunk when they arrested him, registering a .22 on a breathalyzer. He was arrested for domestic assault, violating his parole and resisting arrest.

His name is being withheld pending arraignment.

The woman refused medical treatment for her injuries, which included a laceration and minor facial injuries.
