SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP, Mich.–A 17-year-old is dead after being hit by a vehicle on I-94 early New Year’s Day.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to eastbound I-94 near 26 Mile Rd. just before 6 a.m. There, they found the teen’s body laying on the median side of the highway.

Witnesses told deputies the 17-year-old was walking west on the eastbound side of I-94 when he was hit by a minivan. The driver of the minivan was a 49-year-old from Indiana, who was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office said it didn’t appear that speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. That part of the highway was shut down for around three hours afterward.

The incident is still under investigation.
