PORTAGE, Mich. — A teen driver is in custody following a police chase that ended with the teen hitting and killing another driver Saturday night.

Officers said they spotted a car around 9:15 Saturday night fleeing from a Kalamazoo Public Safety officer. The Portage officer then pulled behind the vehicle when the 17-year-old sped through a parking lot before fleeing west on Kilgore Road from South Westnedge Avenue.

The teen driver continued to flee west on Kilgore Road before turning south onto Oakland Drive. In the 7900 block of Oakland, the teen driver crashed into another vehicle backing out of a driveway.

The driver pulling out the driveway, 33-year-old Crystal Norton from Paw Paw, died at the scene.

The teen driver and his 16-year-old passenger were not hurt. The 16-year-old was taken to the hospital but later released.

Authorities said that charges have been filed against the 17-year-old driver and his arraignment is expected to take place early this week.
