GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Michigan residents are being urged to donate bottled water, hoping to ease the burden of a state of emergency now causing serious illness throughout the community of Flint.

Representatives from the second largest water department union in the state are coming together for a water drive this Saturday at the Grand Rapids Employee Independent Union Hall located at 917 Bridge Street NW in Grand Rapids.

Donations of bottled water are welcome from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. They’re also asking volunteers to help drive the donations to Flint.

Organizers like Lisa Rule, G.R.E.I.U said it’s up to the people of Michigan to come forward and offer support.

Rule is the secretary of the Grand Rapids Employee Independent Union.

“We turn on our faucets and we have clean fresh water everyday, we take that for granted sometimes,” said Rule. “We have people in flint that now are sick because they can’t drink this water. They can’t cook with it, they can’t bathe their children with it, and the least that we can do is come together as a state. Being the second largest city in the state of Michigan, we have a lot of employees and a lot of residents, and I’m sure that they would love to step up to the plate.”
