MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — Herbert is an English bulldog who is staying at Pound Buddies Animal Shelter in Muskegon.  The shelter's director said some concerned citizens spotted him running loose in the frigid temperatures.

"He was found wondering around and was picked up right away, actually by animal control," Lana Carson, director of Pound Buddies said.

But the pup has needs beyond shelter.

"He's underweight, and so he doesn't have a lot of body weight. He was definitely very cold when he came in, and he was brought in on Saturday," Carson explained.

She said she's taken a lot of calls about dogs and cats spotted outside in this kind of weather.

"And then the phone calls... not only to us. But also animal control, and I know 911 dispatch. Yesterday was a pretty busy day for them because people are concerned about animals that are left out in the yard or tied up. We're seeing an increase because of the weather," Carson said.

Faith is another underweight dog rescued from the cold. Carson named her and said neighbors got together just before the temperatures dropped and brought Faith in.

"She's probably been out there longer for what they even know because she's very thin. She underweight. She has some open sores. It's probably perfect timing to get her in from out of the cold," Carson said.

When it's this cold outside, it's best to bring your pets inside. Carson saids if you have an outdoor dog like a Husky, and it's below 32 degrees, an owner is required by law to provide shelter and have some sort of comfortable layer for the dog to warm itself (i.e. straw or hay).
