GRAND RAPIDS -- A West Michigan hospital performed five kidney transplants in a 24-hour period earlier this week, and today they celebrated their accomplishment.

Mercy Health St. Mary's hospital performed the first transplant at 8:30 Tuesday morning, and completed the fifth at 3 AM Wednesday morning. This made for a long, tiring day for the staff. They all say it was worth it, however, to help those in need.

The average wait time for a kidney recipient is about five years, and there are over 2800 people waiting for healthy kidneys in the state of Michigan.
