KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- A teen girl is alive today after narrowly escaping the shooting that killed her boyfriend and his father in Kalamazoo.

Tyler Smith, 18, and his father Richard Smith, 53, were shot and killed at the Seelye Ford KIA Dealership Saturday night.  The suspect, Jason Dalton, 45, has been charged in their murder and murders of four other people later that same night at an area Cracker Barrel.  Two other people were wounded in the shooting spree.

Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley says that Tyler's girlfriend, who is not being named at this time, was with Richard and Tyler looking at cars Saturday night but had stayed in the car.  When the suspect arrived and started shooting at the Smiths, she hid in the back seat of the car.

Hadley says that the suspect walked right by her.

Dalton was charged with six counts of murder, two counts of assault with intent to murder and eight counts of felony firearms.  He is being held without bond.
