LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Bernie Sanders has won Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary, triumphing in a state with the second-most Democratic delegates in the nominating contest so far.

His victory is a surprising setback for Hillary Clinton, whom Sanders criticizes for supporting trade deals with “disastrous” consequences for blue-collar workers in Michigan and elsewhere. Clinton proposes a “clawback” of tax benefits for companies that ship jobs overseas.

Whichever Democrat secures the nomination may be positioned to do well in Michigan in November. No Republican nominee has won the state since 1988.

Both Clinton and Sanders highlighted Flint’s water crisis while campaigning in Michigan and appeared there for a Democratic debate on Sunday.

Delegates will be divided proportionally.
